04 — Taxation

How is an LTD taxed?

UK corporation tax is 19% on profits up to £50,000, rising progressively to 25% above £250,000. The pre-year-end optimisation review reduces the taxable base every year, within the law.

The real question is your overall tax picture: the UK applies no withholding tax on dividends paid to non-resident shareholders. You receive the gross amount, then taxed under the rules of your country of residence and the applicable tax treaty.

Combined with the right salary/dividend mix, this framework can bring the total tax burden down to a very low level, sometimes 0%, depending on the profile. That's what the onboarding strategy session establishes, with real numbers.

05 — Who is it for?

Who is this service for?

Our accounting service is designed for specific profiles. Here's where it makes sense, and where it doesn't.

When it makes sense

You have an active LTD

Your company collects and spends: it must keep clean books and file its accounts and CT600 on time, every year.

You invoice through your LTD

Whether it's e-commerce, consulting or online services, you need rigorous bookkeeping and compliant filings.

You run a holding

A holding's accounting involves dividend flows between entities and specific documentation. We know these setups inside out.

You're switching providers

You're not happy with your current accountant and you're looking for a more responsive, more rigorous, more transparent partner.

When it's NOT the right fit

Company with no real activity

If your company is dormant with no activity, its obligations are reduced: our full support isn't justified yet.

One-off DIY accounting

If you just want a balance sheet produced once a year with no ongoing follow-up, our approach isn't the right fit. We work long-term, with regular monitoring.

Company in another country

We only handle the accounting of UK companies (LTD and LLP). For other jurisdictions, we can point you to partners in our network.

06 — Mistakes to avoid

Common LTD accounting mistakes

The mistakes we see most often among founders running their LTD from abroad or without proper support.

01

Missing the Corporation Tax payment

The tax is due 9 months and 1 day after year-end, before the CT600 deadline itself. Many founders discover it with the late interest.

02

Forgetting the confirmation statement

It's due every year on the company's anniversary date. Forgetting it exposes the LTD to being struck off the register by Companies House.

03

Confusing home-country accounting with UK standards

UK standards differ from the French or Belgian chart of accounts. Misclassified entries are expensive to fix: better to do it right from the start.

04

Ignoring the VAT thresholds

Above £90,000 of UK turnover, VAT registration is mandatory. Missing it leads to a painful retroactive catch-up.

UK LTD accounting FAQ

The answers to the questions our clients ask most often about their LTD's accounting and taxes.

UK standards (UK GAAP: FRS 102, or FRS 105 for micro-entities). Small LTDs benefit from lighter obligations: simplified accounts and audit exemption under the legal thresholds. At The Horizon Founder, we apply the most favourable regime for your situation. The result: credible financial statements for banks and platforms, without unnecessary complexity.

No, not for the vast majority of LTDs: a small company is audit-exempt as long as it stays under the legal thresholds (turnover, balance sheet total, headcount). If growth takes you past them, we coordinate the audit with licensed UK auditors. For almost all our clients, no audit is required.

The corporation tax return (CT600) must be filed within 12 months of year-end, and the tax paid 9 months and 1 day after year-end. If your company is VAT-registered (mandatory above £90,000 of UK turnover), there are quarterly VAT returns via Making Tax Digital. If you pay yourself a salary, payroll runs through PAYE. We handle all of it for you.

That's the role of the pre-year-end optimisation review, included in the subscription: investments to bring forward, director's remuneration to adjust, overlooked deductible expenses, provisions. Combined with the right salary/dividend mix based on your tax treaty, it reduces the bill every year, within the law. It often pays for the subscription on its own.

Of course, you can transfer your accounting to us at any time. We collect the history from your previous provider and take over all ongoing obligations. We also run a transition review to check previous entries and ensure the continuity of your compliance.

What if your tax bill dropped to 0%?

Depending on your country of residence and your profile, a well-structured UK LTD can bring your taxes down to the legal minimum, sometimes 0%. Book a strategy call, no commitment: we'll tell you with real numbers.
